Credit Recovery

  • It is critical that every student is cognizant of his or her academic standing and potential need to recover credit.
  • Per semester, students receive .5 credit for every class he/she earns a “D” or higher in.  If a student earns an “F”, he or she does not receive credit
  • Core courses (English, Math, etc.) are needed for graduation and world languages are needed for scholarships and college.  If a student takes a core course or world language and does not earn semester credit, he/she must retake it and successfully recover the missing .5 credit by the end of the following semester.
  • If a course is not recovered by the deadline, a student may be jeopardizing his/her enrollment status at BDCHS
  • A student may recover an honors or AP course by taking either the honors or regular level of that course.
  • By recovering a course, grade enhancement may also apply if the student earns a “C” or higher in the recovery attempt (please refer to the right-hand side column)

Grade Enhancement

  • Grade enhancement applies when  a student retakes a class and the new, higher grade replaces the old, lower grade for his/her unweighted GPA.
  • Only high school classes one earns a “D” or “F” in are eligible for grade enhancement AND a student must then earn a “C” or higher in the recovery course for the original grade to be enhanced
  • For high school-level classes taken in middle school, a student may retake a class for grade enhancement that he/she earned a C or lower in, but, for enhancement purposes, must earn a C or higher in the second attempt
  • Core course grades may only be enhanced with a grade earned from the same, retaken course.  A student may take either the honors or regular level of the original course.
  • Elective course grades may be enhanced with the grade earned from the same, retaken course, or, if the same course is unavailable, a different elective course
Both GPAs are effected:
  • Unweighted (state); two circumstances:
    - –If a “C” or higher is earned it will replace the original grade in the uGPA calculation
    - –If a “D” or “F” is earned it will not replace the original grade, but will go on the transcript
  • Weighted (district) – the original grade remains and the recovery grade is added to the transcript
  • Please note: the original and recovery grades will always be shown on the student’s transcript
