There are many types of financial aid:
  • Scholarships - money given to students based on academic or other reasons that usually does not have to be repaid (may be federal, state, local, or via an institution/organization); subsidized is better than unsubsidized since interest does not accumulate right away
  • Grants - financial aid one does not have to repay
  • Loans - borrowed money one must repay with interest; just because someone is awarded a loan does NOT mean one should accept it--the other options listed are usually preferred
  • Work Study - colleges offer jobs solely to students who demonstrate financial need (one must still apply for them and compete with other Work Study students for the job); in the FAFSA a student must signify he/she wants to be considered for Work Study
  • Military-based - the military has options for financially helping those who serve
  • State-aid programs - states have need and merit-based aid programs to help individuals with college expenses

There are many resources to help students and families plan financially for college and beyond.  The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) created Navigating Your Financial Future which has information about financial literacy, financial aid, budgeting, building credit and much more.  NYFF may be accessed at http://www.navigatingyourfinancialfuture.org/

NYFF also has a monthly newsletter: Click here

Khan Academy has a series of videos with information about paying for college (types of financial aid, applications, etc.).  View them by clicking here.

The FDOE Office of Student Financial Assistance can be contacted at 727-771-4397.

PBS has information on managing your money.
