Making the College Decision

Many variables influence one's choice of a college.  Some of these influences are noted below:
  • Academic opportunities
  • Degrees offered
  • Special programs
  • Prestige
  • Athletics
  • Teacher-to-student ratio (size)
  • Location, area, and setting (rural, urban)
  • Tuition/financial aid
  • Personal/cultural “fit”
  • Organizations/activities of interest
  • Entrance criteria

A weighted decision matrix may help one see which options pull ahead and which stay behind.  The following website explains how to create one: http://it.toolbox.com/blogs/enterprise-solutions/constructing-a-weighted-matrix-13125
  • When making the decision, it is important to understand that a lot of times one must have a partnership with his/her family and open a dialogue with them, be realistic and practical (especially with finances), and know that it is on him/herself to get information and narrow down their top college choices.  But remember, don’t believe every word you hear and make sure you make a well-thought out, informed decision.
