Unweighted GPA Calculation
Unweighted GPAs are measured on a scale from 0.0 to 4.0 and do not take rigor of courses into account.
Each letter grade is assigned a value: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0.
Per each semester of a high school class, a student will earn 0.5 credit. For dual enrollment (DE) classes, a semester-long course may earn the student 0.5 or 1.0 credit depending on the course. For DE classes, the credit potential for each class is designated in the Course Equivalency Table found at the HCC DE website.
To calculate an unweighted GPA:
Equation:
[ 4.0 (# of credits A) + 3.0 (# of credits B) + 2.0 (# of credits C) + 1.0 (# of credits D) + 0.0 (# of credits F) ] / Total number of attempted credits
Keep in mind:

To calculate an unweighted GPA:
- Separately determine the number of credits earned of A, B, C, D, and F grades.
- Multiply each amount by the value associated with that letter grade.
- Add these totals.
- Divide by the total number of attempted credits.
Equation:
[ 4.0 (# of credits A) + 3.0 (# of credits B) + 2.0 (# of credits C) + 1.0 (# of credits D) + 0.0 (# of credits F) ] / Total number of attempted credits
Keep in mind:
- The number of credits on the top line (numerator) should equal the total number of credits on the bottom line (denominator).
- The total number of credits should equal the number of credits you have attempted thus far in high school.
- For each class listed on one’s Summary Worksheet, or in FloridaShines, the credit awarded for the course is either 0.5 or 1.0.
Weighted GPA Calculation
A weighted GPA takes into account the rigor of honors, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment classes.
To calculate the weighted GPA, a student would take his/her unweighted GPA and then add any applicable bonus points to that value. Bonus points only apply if a student earned a grade of C or higher in the semester.
Honors courses gain students 0.04 additional weight per 0.5 credit. Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment courses earn students 0.08 additional weight per 0.5 credit. A student should separately count the number of times he/she earned 0.5 credit in honors, Advanced Placement, and dual enrollment course, and then multiply the course type by the associated weight.
